A Weekend in Wonderland

Last weekend we were lucky enough to be a part of the Mad Hatter Vintage Flea Market, hosted by Gladys and Celia Hanning of Junebug Furniture and Design. The grange, where the show is held was full of amazing antiques and vintage items brought by a faboulous selection of vendors. The setting was magical, and so much detail was paid to bringing the Wonderland theme to life. Thanks to Gladys and Celia for a beautiful show and such a lovely weekend!

1957 Pathfinder Vintage Trailer

Last winter I drove out to the small town of Tum Tum, Washington and came home with this 1957 Pathfinder trailer. I suppose I am a little sentimental about vintage trailers because they remind of my great-grandparents, Grandma Anna and Daddy Bud. As long as I can remember, they had a little Shasta trailer that they used to travel back and fourth from Tucson to Yuma. My great-grandfather was a conductor with Southern Pacific railroad and my great-grandmother would stay in the trailer while they were away from their home in Tucson. After he retired from the railroad, it was used for camping, fishing and hunting, and later as storage. Even after it had been permanently parked on the property, they took special care of it, painting it every couple of years to keep it looking good after being baked by the Arizona sun. As kids, we used to love to play in the trailer; it made a perfect "clubhouse".

Maybe because of sentimental reasons, or maybe because I wanted my clubhouse back, I decided that I wanted a little vintage trailer to park on my property, as well. I have been looking for one for several years that would fit into the modest budget that I had been setting aside for it. Finally, I found this little Pathfinder on Craig's List. It was priced right, so I drove out to Tum Tum in the wee hours of the morning to purchase it. Happily, the interior of the trailer is good condition, with no major damage. Nearly everything is original such as the lights, shades and Formica. The floor had been replaced in the 70's and was really unattractive, so I covered over that with black and white vinyl. After the floor was finished, I could think about decorating the trailer.
I decided that I wanted to decorate it with fun, vintage items that would be true to the era of the trailer, instead of a specific theme. Although, I am definitely going for more kitchy items.
I was able to display the trailer at our May Barn Bazaar, and since our guests seemed to enjoy seeing the inside of the trailer, I thought our blog readers would like to see it, as well. It's still a work it progress, but I'm in no hurry. I am enjoying the process of fixing it up and finding just the right items to put inside. My son is having a great time with his new "clubhouse", and so am I. I hope you enjoy it, too.

It's been a crazy spring and summer, so far! I'm finally able to post a few photos (all taken by fabulous Mary Joe Photography) of our spring Barn Bazaar. Thank you to all our wonderful customers and vendors. We had a great show and fortunately, after such a wet spring, we were blessed with perfect weather during the show. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who helped to make the show a success! Our next show will be our Country Christmas show at the Moran Prairie Grange on December 3rd & 4th. We have decided not to hold a Fall show this year so that we can focus all of our attention on the Christmas show. You will be able to see us at some other shows this summer: Art on the Green (with our artwork) and Buggy Barn with art and antiques, followed by Funky Junk in Sandpoint, ID. I thought it would be fun to share one of my all time favorite finds with you. These pages are part of a school sewing project from 1924, possibly made by a teacher or advanced student. . This wonderful sewing "sampler", which is all contained in a Scholastic binder, begins with a detailed instruction of articles needed for sewing, including the preparation for sewing, the thread, cloth, etc. The rest of the binder in filled with 26 Models, all with miniature samples and detailed instructions on how to make the article. Every aspect of sewing is covered; including common stitches, patchwork, matching stripes on the bias, darning, French seams, smocking, fancy stitches, ruffles, how to make such items as: nightgowns, undershirts, drawers, aprons, and more.
What I really love about this book is that you can really feel how much the creator really loved sewing and how much time, and devotion she put into this project; all the details and knowledge are amazing. I am so glad that this book found it's way to me, to be enjoyed for many years to come. It is definitely a keeper.

No matter how many times I return to Seattle, it seams like we always end up at Pike's Market. Our last trip to the Emerald City was no exception. I have very fond, sentimental memories of the market since it was a favorite destination while I was in high school (I lived there from 1990 to 1999). The truly wonderful thing is; it hasn't changed in the 20 years that I have been going there. My son hadn't been since he was a baby, so we thought he would like it. Unfortunately, it was Sea Fair weekend and downtown Seattle was just packed with people. So after a quick look around, we headed down to the water to take my son to Ye Olde Curiosity Shop (another favorite high school haunt). After seeing a few mummies and shrunken heads, we walked back up to Westlake Center to catch the monorail to the Space Needle. This was the most exciting part of the trip to my seven year old son, of course. The crowds at the Needle were unbelievable, and the price was not what I remembered ($18 each!) and there were so many people in the needle that we could hardly move. Never the less, we had a great time, my son was thrilled and after and exhausting day, we headed back to the hotel - along with a few souvenirs, of course.

On the way out of Seattle, heading toward Cashmere, we stopped to show my son Snoqualmie Falls. Beautiful, as always. Took a couple photos and got back on the road. Several hours later, we arrived at Apple Annie's in Cashmere. If you haven't had a chance to shop at this mall, I recommend a detour in their direction. They have 70,000 sq ft of antique shopping under one roof! They even have a fun, fifties style diner. We had a great time and I finally found a gym locker with baskets for my son's room. Amazingly, and thankfully, it fit in the Suburban. After spending several hours, and finding some treasures at Apple Annie's, it was time to head home to Spokane. Which we were very glad to return to, no matter how much fun we have anywhere else. As my son would say 'home, sweet home'.

Thanks to everyone who stopped our booths to say 'hi' to us at Art on the Green last weekend in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Art on the Green is always a wonderful show, with a line up of some of the best area artists. Including two of our past vendors, watercolor artist, Andy Sewell and Shari French.
In my last post I mentioned that Art on the Green always has the best entertainment, but I forgot to mention the amazing sand castle artist. This is the 12th year they have hosted the sand castle. The castle is built during the show weekend and it is truly an amazing work of art.
I have also included a couple of photos of some items in my booth. These will be listed online soon as well. Keys have been a very popular theme with me lately. Ill post a few more photos of other key related items later on.

These ornaments/hangings are something new we have been working on here at the shop. They are made our of antique, lithographed Arm & Hammer trade cards. We found a stash of these fabulous cards here in Spokane, and wanted to preserve these beautiful little treasures. We have encased them under beveled glass which has been soldered and hand-polished. They measure approx. 2" x 3" and are tied with vintage ribbon, but can be suspended from silver chain for an additional $3.

Our new bottle cap bead bracelets are another new addition to our shop. Each one will be unique, but can be made in the same style, if desired. We found these fabulous vintage bottle cap beads earlier this year at the Tucson Gem Show, and purchased them directly from the artist who creates them. Small Town 4th

I love living in a small town, and 4th of July fireworks are just one of the many reasons. Every fourth, several residents of Spangle put on a big fireworks display. We pull our trucks up along the road, get the chairs out and sit and watch a pretty amazing show. They are set off from several locations so there is a lot to see, not to mention the firecrackers and sparklers on the street and sidewalk. Happy 4th of July everyone!

Mom's Tacos

We call them Mom's tacos, but really, this is the way my great-grandmother made tacos, and the way the women in our family have made them ever since. It is by far the most requested meal by our friends and family. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Ingredients:

Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper to taste
2 lbs Ground Beef
24 Corn Tortillas
1 Head Iceberg Lettuce
1 Lg Yellow Onion
3/4 lb Monteray Jack Cheese, grated

Mix head of chopped lettuce and onion with salt and pepper to taste and set aside.

Pat 3 - 4 tablespoons ground beef onto one side of tortilla. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Fry in enough hot oil to just barely cover tortillas. Fry until tortilla is golden brown and meat is cooked through. We always place open tortilla is skillet and close quickly with spatula. You can also secure them closed with a toothpick which you should remove as soon as they are cooked. Drain cooked tacos on paper towels. Sit tacos upright in a casserole dish and stuff with generous amount of lettuce and onion mixture. Top with cheese and bake at 350 until cheese is melted. Serve with choice of salsa and enjoy!

Pat meat onto one side of tortilla.

Stuff lettuce mixture into cooked tacos.

Enjoy!

Memorial Day

We would like to take a moment to honor those who have sacrificed their lives for our country, as well as those who have served, and those who continue to served our nation. Thanks are not enough.

As some of you may know, we are mourning the passing of a beloved member of our family, Amril "Rudy" Radford. Loving husband to Joan, father and father-in-law of Dianna & Jim, grandfather of Fielding and great-grandfather to his name-sake Amril James. We are are very proud that he will among the first veterans to be interred at the new Eastern Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake. This long-awaited veterans cemetery was appropriately dedicated this Memorial Day and interments will begin on June 7th. We are blessed that he will have the opportunity to be honored by his country for his service at his burial on June 10th, 2010 at 1 pm.

Thank you so much for your condolences and prayers; they mean so much. We miss our "Poppy" dearly.

Spring in Eastern Washington

The buckets above were used to hold rocks to secure the fence posts many years ago. My son loves the old, abandoned "relics" on our property.

My son and I took a walk on the our property yesterday with the our dog and camera -we were looking for the wild turkeys that we could hear in the distance; it got dark before we could find them. We are so glad that spring has finally arrived! Even though it's been an exceptionally mild winter here in eastern Washington, it still seemed like a long one. We are starting to get the property ready for the show, but still have a lot of winter clean-up to do. This show will have more grassy areas and we are planting a lavender garden as well. Will keep you posted as we progress with the new garden. We are looking forward to sharing the new additions with you.

New Store Sign

We finally got our new sign up on the barn today. Our beautiful sign was designed and hand painted/hand lettered by Tudy of Out the Woods. She is an amazingly talented artist, specializing in the nearly lost art of hand lettering. She is also a woodworker and carver. In fact, the hand carved hearts pictured in our blog banner are hers. If you would like to see more of Tudy's artwork, she will be at our Barn Bazaar Art and Antique Show in May. She will have an assortment of hand lettered signs made from re purposed items and old wood, as well as furniture and her very popular hearts and carved fish.

We are very pleased to announce that Free Rein Therapeutic Riding will be raffling off this fantastic handmade Boot Quilt at our Spring Barn Bazaar. They will also have information available about their amazing therapeutic riding program, including how to participate as a rider, as well as possible volunteer opportunities. The mission of Free Rein Therapuetic Riding is to "enhance the physical, mental and emotional well being of individuals with disabilities through equine assisted activities". Proceeds from the raffle will help pay for the program. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at Free Rein, please check out the volunteer page of their website. Collecting: Vintage Hankies

I have collected vintage hankies for years and I just love their beautiful, colorful prints and all the creative things that can be done with them - other than the originally intended use, of course! I often use mine on tables, instead of a doily, or put them in a basket as a liner. They can be used to wrap gifts, make sachets, window valances and I've seen them used as watchbands. The great thing is that they are still inexpensive and can be easily found at yard and estate sales. If they have stains, I soak them in Biz and I always iron mine with light starch after I launder them. I store mine in a vintage hanky box that I found at Goodwill, when they are not being used. The list of possible uses for hankies is endless and even though we don't carry hankies like we used to, doesn't mean we can't enjoy these little textile treasures for years to come. How do you use your vintage hankies?

...antique keys. We have been collecting keys for many years. Some were collected out of necesity (to lock the bathroom door in our old house!), some because they were left over, or found in barns and garages, and some because they were just too beautiful or interesting to part with. Some were even used to make art; remember framed (harvest gold) felt wall hangings with antique keys (and other antique items) glued to them? Some of our keys still wear remnants of their felty past. Many of our keys were just stored away in coffee cans over the years. I use keys quite often in my jewerly and Dianna has been recreating some fun wire pieces she designed to sell at shows years ago. Mata Ortiz Pottery Bracelet

One of my favorite finds at one of the many gem shows in Tucson, was this beautiful bracelet made from a shard of Mata Ortiz pottery. Mata Ortiz pottery is some of the most beautiful, intricate pottery in the world, but unfortunately, during the firing process, some pieces break. The company, Mata Ortiz To You has come up with a very unique solution. They take the broken pieces to a master silver smith in Taxco, Mexico and have gorgeous jewelry made from them. I love that they are saving what would otherwise be a lost work of art and creating a whole new, wearable work of art out of it. Talk about recycling! The bracelet above is the piece that I purchased at the To Bead True Blue show. Back from the Old Pueblo

We had a great time in our hometown of Tucson visiting with family and friends and shopping and eating the best Mexican food in the country (especially cheese crisps and green corn tamales!!). We didn't take many photos, but the first is a view of the Catalina mountains from our hotel. The next three were taken in the garden of a dear family friend, and the last (my son's favorite), was taken at one of the 40+ gem shows going on all over the city this month. I love the old Pueblo, but it's good to be home in the beautiful northwest.

Collecting: Stone Fruit

Stone fruit became popular in the the United States in the late part of the 19th and the early part of the 20th century, when the colorful fruit were brought home as souvenirs from Italy. Stone fruit has been made for generations in the town of Volterra, Italy, in the Tuscan mountains. The area is a rich source of the alabaster used to carve the fruit. The fruit are hand-painted and heated to seal the finish. Stone fruit is still produced in Italy, but the old ones are mellow in color and bear the tell-tale scuff marks and dings that are a reflection of their age.

...Amish puzzle ball pincushions. The antique versions of these wonderful little pieces of art are not easy to find, especially on the west side of the US. So far I have only been able to find two after several years of searching local antiques shops and shows. I know next to nothing about their history as a pincushion, but they are perhaps more recognizable nowadays as a baby toy. They are perfect for little hands to grab onto; I even found one at Target a couple of years ago as a dog toy! Patterns to make them are readily available, although our favorite is in a wonderful book by Maggie Bonanomi, called With These Hands. Maggie lives in Lexington, Missouri and creates wonderful primitive sewing projects using natural and antique fabrics. Our favorite projects are her pincushions, especially the wonderful puzzle balls, which she shows you how to make in detail in her book.

Hills Brothers Make-Do $28

Over the years we have accumulated an odd, and rather large assortment of containers: vintage jello molds, lidless cans, enamel cups, antique tins, etc. We have also collected quite a few linens and textiles that are not exactly pristine, such as stained tablecloths, dishtowels and "cutter quilts". So, for several years we have been planning to create "make-do" pincushions in the spirit of the the resourceful women of the past. Vintage-style recycling, so to speak. Dianna and I had a lot of fun over several days creating pincushions to take to the Buggy Barn Quilt Show's Folk Art Sale and MaryJanes FarmFair.We had great response over the pincushions from customers, and ended up selling them all, including quite a few to MaryJanes store and Bed & Breakfast (see our pincushions on page 59 & 60 of the February issue of MaryJanesFarm Magazine).

We have so much fun making these little creations, which can be made from practically anything at all. They are so simply to make, all you need is a container, fabric, needle and thread, embroidery floss, a hot-glue gun, and a fun vintage button. If you're anything like us, you'll end up with more pincushions than pins!

Collections: American Coverlets

This antique jacquard coverlet is one of my favorite thrift store finds of all time. I found it in a local shop about two years ago and nearly screamed when I saw it (do you know the feeling?). I have wanted a coverlet for many years so it was quite a treat to find one (that I could afford) in my neck of the woods. I love the unique history of this American textile, and was expecially thrilled when I was able to find some history on the weaver of my own coverlet. I did a search on internet and was able to find out through county records that JP Cole was born in 1824 to in the Auburn township area of Ohio, where his family were some of the earliest settlers. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to Vernon Township. He was raised on a farm, but after reaching adulthood, he learned to weave fancy coverlets using the Jacquard loom. He followed this trade for many years with good success. Like his father, he also farmed and ran a cider press on his property. He married Mary A Warner in 1858 and they had nine children.

Knowing this brief history of the weaver made the coverlet that much more special.

Barn Bazaar Art and Antique Show, restorations and additions to our country property, including a brand new garden. We are even restoring a 1953 Ford pick-up to use at the show.

Pottery Place Plus & Inland Crafts

We are very excited to have been asked to be the November Guest Artists at Pottery Place Plus in Spokane. Pottery Place is a wonderful shop in downtown Spokane (right next to Auntie's Bookstore) that features the artwork of several local artists, including several artists who also participate in our Barn Bazaar show. Custom Necklaces

About a year ago I made a series of horse themed necklace for Foxy Horse and Hound, which is a wonderful gift and tack shop in Spokane. It's located in the Latah Creek Shopping Center next door the Latah Bistro. Right away there were requests for custom necklaces, so I made this necklace as a sample of what a custom order necklace would look like. This was my horse, Shaalim way back when I was in high school and lived in the Seattle area. All of my necklaces have horse related quotes on the back, or custom sayings. I have had so much fun making these necklaces for my horse loving customers! Of course, I am happy to do custom orders with any image, not just horses!

Would you like to learn how to crochet a round & oval rag rug? We will be offering a rag rug class in our shop on Saturday, October 24th from 11 am to 2 pm. Learn how to make place mats, chair pads, trivets, mug mats and of course, rugs out of recycled materials, such as old sheets and clothes. The three hour workshop will be taught by Claudia of The Pacadashery, and will cost $45. The class will include: a beautiful custom-make birch wood crochet hook, hands on instructions and a light lunch & snacks.

We have been eating at the Harvester Restaurant since we first moved to Spangle over 12 years ago. The Harvester is just off highway in Spangle, WA and offers a great selection of home cooked favorites. We usually go on Friday, which happens to be prime rib night, but I must admit a weakness for the chicken fried steak. Whichever I choose, I know it will be a great meal, served by their friendly staff. So, if you are in the neighborhood, stop by for breakfast, lunch or dinner and don't forget the pie!

Candy Corn Bracelet

Just in time for this first official day of fall! Our new Halloween candy corn bracelet. I couldn't resist these whimsical glass candy corn and "BOO" beads. I accented them with Swarovski crystals and glass fiber optic beads. A cast silver jack-o-lantern charm and glass candy corn bead dangle from the toggle clasp. Be sure to enter our gift basket drawing while at our show. Just fill out a ticket with your address and phone number and drop it into the green granite ware coffee pot. The gift basket is located on the green table across from the food vendors.
This fall the basket includes: Note cards by Dianna Chelf, a vintage yellow gingham apron, a Blue Q shopper (also available in our store and online), a recipe file box, a scarecrow and the new Kitchen Linens book by EllenAnne Geisel.

We have a huge selection of new aprons by Elaine Forster. We have full and half adult aprons, youth and child aprons. We have tons of wonderful yo yo pins too.

Here is a sneak peek at what you can expect to find at the Fall Barn Bazaar this weekend. The wood hearts are hand carved by Tudy of Out of the Woods. She also makes wonderful, hand lettered signs out of re purposed wood. The rings are made from vintage anagram tiles, the lavender treats are from Blue Truck Lavender and the soap from Cedar House Soaps. You will also find many other wonderful crafters and antiques and vintage vendors at the show. Please look at the vendor list on our website for a complete list of participating vendors. Pumpkins!

Last weekend we went to the pumpkin patch to gather pumpkins, gourds, & cornstalks for our Fall Barn Bazaar Art & Anti que Show. We always have so much fun doing this, and my son especially loves it. There are so many wonderful varieties of pumpkins and gourds to choose from and since it's just before the big selling season, there aren't too many people out at the pumpkin patch. It's a little more work than later on in the season since the fields haven't been mowed yet and the vines are still about waist high. You really have to hunt for the pumpkins! We also got to chop down our own corn stalks and my son got to pick a few strawberries to munch on the way to the feed store for a trailer load of straw bales. It was a wonderful day. Now all we have to do is decorate!

A Great Weekend at the Buggy Barn Quilt Show

The Buggy Barn was so much fun. The show is made up of a lovely group of arts & craft and antiques vendors. Thank you to Ann Lindahl who organizes the show each year. Ann makes wonderful pincushion make-dos and hooked rugs.

Our booths were right next to Marianne, who is the owner of the Picket Fence Country Shop in Coeur d'Alene, ID. She was there with the most amazing, hand carved house lights. I fell completely in love with these, and could not resist purchasing the white, two story farm house in the photo. These houses are made in Oregon and each one takes four days to carve. these fabulous houses.

One of our favorite vendors is Virginia Cole of Galloping Pony Studio. The makes the most wonderful miniature quilt collages. She creatively incorporates vintage ephemera and other miscellaneous items into her artwork. All of her pieces include quotes or sayings that lend a sentimental and meaningful feel to the work. Lizzie from Lizzy Lou's Handmades was also at the show. She participates in our show as well as in the Custer Craft Show. Her primitive country painting is some of the best. She painted these shoes for us out of vintage pair we had given her. I love them! Thanks Lizzie.

Another of our favorite vendors that participate in our show is Chuck and Joni of Branches. They make great outdoor (or indoor) wood decor. Their work is whimsical and fun. At the Buggy Barn they were selling Halloween and harvest theme items. The photos are from our Barn Bazaar where they sold Spring themed items.

Don't forget this weekend is the Funky Junk Antique Show in Sandpoint, ID. Holly, who hosts the show with her friend Jennifer, was at the Bugger Barn with her mother selling antiques. The Funky Junk sale is sure to be a fun event - Don't miss it!

Art on the Green - Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Dianna and I will be participating in the 41st annual Art on the Green in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho this weekend.
Art on the Green is held at the old Fort Sherman Grounds on the North Idaho College Campus, just a short walk from Downtown and City Park. Shuttle bus service to the west side of the NIC campus from downtown is also available during the festival.
There is a fabulous selection of artists as well as live music performed on two stages all day long, both days. Click here to see the entertainment calendar.
If you have never been to this art show, we encourage you to make the trip. Its one of the best in the area. Hope to see you there!

Make- Do Pincushions

My mom and I both have a weakness for pincushions. We both collect antique and vintage pincushions as well as other sewing items. So, last year, we began gathering up items that we could use to create "make-do" pincushions with. For about a week, I sat and made pincushions out of everything I could figure out how to put fabric into. I had a lot of fun making them, and was able to re purpose quite a few items that would not have been very usable otherwise.

I am very pleased that my pincushions will be for sale at MaryJanesFarm Store in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and at her Bed & Breakfast in Moscow, Idaho. MaryJane Butters publishes one of the
loveliest magazines, as well as several beautiful books. They are full of delicious recipes, useful projects, and interesting information, not to mention the gorgeous photographs, which are mostly taken by MaryJane herself. If you have the opportunity to visit her lovely store, keep your eye out for my pincushions!

A Little Bit Country...

...and that's just the way we like it. One of the most rewarding compliments we get about our show is that it has a casual, comfortable, country feel. Customers often tell us that they feel like lingering at the show, enjoying the music of the Wylie Family Band, the delicious food and the relaxing country atmosphere.

MaryJane's Fouth of July FarmFair!

We had a great time participating in MaryJane's Fourth of July FarmFair in Oakesdale, Wa! The fair was held on the grounds surrounding the old Barron Flour Mill (which MaryJane now owns and is restoring). The setting was fabulous and there were arts & crafts and antiques vendors and fun family activities, such as horse and pony rides all day. Oakesdale is a lovely little town located in the beautiful Palouse Valley. The drive from where we are in Spangle, takes about 45 minutes, and is along one of the most scenic highways in America. I am absolutely awestruck everytime I drive through the area, and reminded of just how lucky I am to live in this amazing part of the country. What a great way to spend the Fourth!

Barn Bazaar Gift Basket

At each show, we have a drawing for a gift basket. This summer's basket is the best one yet! The contents include: a fun vintage style shopping tote (from our store), a vintage chalk ware fruit wall hanging, a vintage paper fan, a colorful vintage tablecloth (from the old Crescent store), a copy of Romantic Homes, a brand-new copy of the Apron Book and of course, an apron to go along with it. Just come to the show, fill out a ticket and drop it in the green coffee pot to enter. Just that easy. The drawing will be held on Sunday evening, after the show.

Fairfield to Celebrate 100th Flag Day Celebration in 2010

Mark your calendars! The year 2010 will mark the 100th celebration of Flag Day in the town of Fairfield, Washington. According to the flag committee's new website, the town of Fairfield is the only town west of the Mississippi that still celebrates Flag Day. The festivities will be held on June 12, 2010. The year 2010 also marks the 100th year of graduating classes from Fairfield and Liberty High Schools. Fairfield will be hosting a Fairfield/Liberty all-school reunion on June 12th, 2010. Anyone who has ever attended or worked at the schools are invited to participate.

This year's event will be held on June 13th, 2009, and promises to be a lot of fun! Please visit the Fairfield Flag Day website for more information about these events.

ArtFest is Just Around the Corner

Both Dianna and I will be participating in the 24th annual ArtFest on May 29 - 31st. The show is put on be the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture and is held across the street form the museum in Coeur d'Alene Park in Browne's Addition. There will be over 125 artists booths, music, kids art activities, tons of great food and more. If you haven't been to ArtFest, you should really try make it down to this fun show. For the junkers out there - there are usually a few yard sales going on in neighborhood surrounding the show. Hope to see you at the show, and be sure to stop by our booths and say 'hi'.

Shown to the left are some new earrings I have made for ArtFest. Hand-forged and hammered sterling earring wires with sterling wire wrapped green amethyst. The silver has been oxidized and polished.

Life is getting pretty hectic around our place lately with all the summer show preparations we have been doing. It's been difficult to remember to slow down and enjoy the beautiful spring scenery. One of my favorite things about living in the country, is the view from my kitchen window. Washing dishes doesn't seem quite so bad when I have this relaxing view to look at.

Hurd Mercantile in Rockford, WA

Yesterday, Nina and I took a drive down to the nearby town of Rockford to shop at the Hurd Mercantile. This fabulous shop truly is like the old-time mercantile store. They sell a little bit of everything from kitchen essentials and wine to beautiful children's items and jewelry. Everything is beautifully arranged, and you could easily spend hours browsing through the store. We had a wonderful time shopping, and the drive to get to Rockford is gorgeous.

Shopping in Palouse, WA

My good friend, Nina is visiting from Portland, so we decided to take a drive down to the lovely town of Palouse to antique for the day. The weather started out sunny and the drive through the Palouse Valley was gorgeous. After getting to the town of Palouse, we stopped into
the Green Frog for a delicious lunch (I recommend the Viking mushroom and swiss sandwich) and coffee. After lunch, our first stop was St Elmo's Antiques, which is owned and operated by Jackie Strack. St Elmo's is full of springtime treasures, and gardening items. We loved the green Hoosier shown above.

Our next stop was Open Eye Consignment Shop, owned by Heidi Kite and her husband. Heidi is one of our Barn Bazaar vendors, and is one of the sweetest people. Her shop is full of antique and vintage items, from kitchen items and tools to vintage clothes and jewelry. She and her husband also own a second shop down the street, which focuses on books and furniture. They are both lovely shops with lots of variety.

The next stop on the list was a new shop, called Palouse Pines Mercantile. This lovely, bright (we love the yellow paint) shop has a great varity of country and primitive items. We fell in love with the great little pie safe shown below.

Next, we stopped at Linda's Whimseys. This sweet shop is full of romatic, Victorian items, both antique as well as new gift items.

We had a great time exploring the town of Palouse, and took home some treasures from the wonderful shops we visited. Definitely a fun way to spend a Saturday.
